Manheim Township School District conducts ongoing activities to identify students who may be in need of special education services. If a child is identified by the District as possibly in need of such services, parents will be notified of applicable procedures. A child with a disability is a student who has been evaluated by the school district's multidisciplinary team and has been determined to have one or more of the following disabilities, and who, by reason thereof, needs special education and related services:
- Autism
- Deaf-Blindness
- Deafness
- Emotional Disturbance
- Hearing Impairment
- Mental Retardation
- Multiple Disabilities
- Orthopedic Impairment
- Other Health Impairment
- Specific Learning Disability
- Speech or Language Impairment
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Visual Impairment
Parents who believe that their school-age child may be in need of special education services may request screening and evaluation at any time, whether or not their child is enrolled in the District's public school program. Requests for screening and evaluation are to be made to the building principal in writing.
The Manheim Township School District will provide to each protected handicapped student, without discrimination or cost to the student or family, those related aids, services or accommodations which are needed to provide equal opportunity to participate in and obtain the benefits of the school program and extracurricular activities. In order to qualify as a protected handicapped student the child must be of school age with a physical or mental disability that substantially limits a major life activity or prohibits participation in or access to an aspect of the school program. These services and protections for 'protected handicapped students' are distinct from those applicable to all eligible or exceptional students with disabilities enrolled in special education programs.
Parents may contact the building principal to request further information on the rights of parents and children, provision of services, evaluation and screening (including purpose, time and location), and due process procedures.
All information gathered about a student is subject to the confidentiality provisions contained in federal and state law. The District has policies and procedures in effect governing the collection, maintenance, destruction and disclosure of this information to third parties. For information about these policies and procedures, as well as rights of confidentiality and access to educational records, parents should contact the building principal in writing.
